Come to your senses and bought a newer car?

Found a 222? Or 221? Or something not 220?

Removed the ABC and put in a conventional suspension??

Ooooooooh, ooooooooh, ooooooooh!
Guess what? I had mine in at our M-B dealer across the street long enough for them to finally do an MPI. $7,996 worth of maintenance they found, $4,800 of which was my worsening oil leaks! $1,700 for my pan gasket and oil level sender and $3,100 for my charge air manifold down in the valley! NOT ONE ABC COMPONENT WET!!!
I settled for having my transmission resealed and getting my cruise control working again. AND I finally ordered a set of factory non-AMG 600 wheels too!

Nice! You’ll be disappointed but I’m probably trading mine on a W222 this weekend.

No, just made the meme lol.

I love it!

Your 600 ownership has not been as straightforward as mine, I feel like. Hell, my car’s warranty was even voided early in its life.
I wouldn’t blame you for trading out of it. It’s a shame what’s probably gonna happen to it from here on out, but it seems like a bad egg.

Yeah, I’m just tired of worrying about it. I want a car that I can drive across the country with no reservations. I love the W220 but I’m fed up with the issues. My maintenance has been about $1 per mile.

Yeah, hopefully picking up that 222 this weekend.

Yeah, I love the radar in my LS430, I can only imagine how much better the 222 will be.

pardon my ignorance, but who made 220 bad? what’s wrong with it?

Depending on model, W220s can have issues with engine, suspension, and electronics. Suspension issues are almost guaranteed at some point on most models. The coupe variant, C215, has all the same fun quirks.

pardon my ignorance once again, but how is that different from any other vehicle?

W220s are perhaps the most troublesome MB of the modern era . I’m not talking about wear related issues or items that fail in 2% of cars , this is more along the lines of flawed designs and items that might fail in 99% of cars.

gotcha. Modern day pinto sin explosions?
![]() 08/01/2018 at 13:05 |

A Pinto might be easier to live with if you can manage to not be rear-ended by a speeding truck. When the suspension fails on a W220, you can’t really drive it. It was bleeding edge tech at the time, and original buyers were beta testers.

is it because it has airbag suspension or something? Cuz I see range rovers and my GX470 also has air bags for suspension. Pretty sure when they go, i wont be able to drive

Air suspension, and there is an active suspension named “ABC” (active body control) which can give people fits. Add to it troublesome early run V12s and electrical issues, and these can be high maintenance vehicles. A quick google would return an infinite amount of gripes, I suspect.
At least with the Rovers and maybe GX, there are kits to convert to conventional suspension. I don’t know anyone who has bothered on a W220.

fascinating. Thanks for that tid bit. I think my friend has a 2008 e350. I have not heard much from him about his experience. It looks like that falls into W221. Boy got lucky there
He had a 2005 e350. His parents took it for a ride and hit a pothole. Basically every airbag deployed and insurance company basically total ed it. I wonder if that was in part due to suspension issues you speak of.

E350 has conventional suspension, cars that late in the run (2008, last model year for that style was 2009) aren’t too troublesome. Maintenance will still be dear compared to a Civrolla, but they aren’t huge pains. E500/550 can have air suspension, which can have issues, but not like turn of the century cars. The car with airbag deployment could be a number of issues = simple defect, weird impact, maybe improper repairs, etc - as a car ages, it is sometimes difficult to determine why things go wrong.
